Malaysia Needs To Prioritise International Climate Finance In 13MP - MP

11/08/2025 06:44 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has to prioritise access to international climate finance under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to strengthen forest protection and expand conservation mechanisms, an MP told the Dewan Rakyat here today.

Tan Hong Pin (PH-Bakri) added that carbon trading was a vital instrument in generating conservation funds, but its implementation at the national level was still unclear.

“I urge the government to provide a detailed explanation on the status of carbon trading implementation and would like to thank a group of 10 civil society groups, including Greenpeace Malaysia, in producing a memorandum containing five core suggestions,” he said while debating the 13MP at the Dewan Rakyat today.

The five suggestions were in line with the 13MP strategies of climate change management, biodiversity conservation and funding a green economy, he added.

“The suggestions include creating a national forest map agreed upon by all states, setting up a satellite forest monitoring centre, providing direct power to Orang Asli and local communities through direct access to funds, as well as forming a National Forest Finance Council and making a political commitment to join the Tropical Forest Forever Facility,” he said.
