Egypt, Saudi Arabia Welcome Australia’s Decision to Recognise Palestinian Statehood

11/08/2025 09:55 PM

CAIRO, Aug 11 (Bernama-WAFA) -- Egypt has welcomed the announcement by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on his country’s intention to recognise the State of Palestine, the Palestine News & Info Agency (WAFA) reported.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said the step supports the restoration of Palestinian rights and the establishment of an independent state on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

It said the decision, along with similar moves by other countries, is a pivotal step towards a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

The ministry noted growing international support for the Palestinian cause and rejection of Israeli practices in the occupied territories, including starvation policies and military aggression in Gaza.

It urged countries yet to recognise Palestine to do so, and called on the international community to intensify efforts to end the Israeli occupation and implement the two-state solution.

Saudi Arabia also welcomed Australia’s announcement.

It praised the international consensus supporting the two-state solution and the establishment of a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
