BINTULU, Aug 25 (Bernama) -- Seventy-four residents of the Seberang Pasar Lama Tatau squatter settlement, situated along Sungai Tatau, about 46 kilometres from here, were left homeless after a fire early this morning.

Tatau Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) operation commander Herudin Ealhi reported that 19 temporary, interconnected houses were affected, with 17 completely destroyed and two others suffering 20 per cent damage.

A 13-year-old boy, Brian Audrey Bunya Niki, sustained 20 per cent burns on his back and was rushed to the Tatau Health Clinic by members of the public for immediate treatment.

“The fire was reported at 10.08 am, triggering an urgent response from the Tatau Fire and Rescue Station, located four kilometres away. Due to the inaccessibility by road, firefighters quickly deployed boats and reached the site by 10.20 am,” he said in a statement today.

The firefighting team battled the blaze with four portable pumps, drawing water from Sungai Tatau. The fire was finally extinguished at 2,33 pm.
