Urban Renewal Bill Can Revitalise Derelict Areas – Selangor MB

26/08/2025 09:25 PM

SHAH ALAM, Aug 26 (Bernama) -- The Urban Renewal Bill, if passed and enforced, could breathe new life into old and dilapidated urban areas, said Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the Urban Renewal Act (URA) is a crucial measure to ensure that derelict areas can be effectively developed.

He said the bill, if passed, will provide an opportunity for the redevelopment of several run-down areas such as Ampang, Gombak and Hulu Langat.

“However, we need to review some objections related to the bill carefully. I believe the URA is necessary for any administrator or government, because otherwise these areas will continue to deteriorate,” he told reporters after the 2025 Excellent and Long Service Awards of Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Selangor (PKNS), here today.

Amirudin said Selangor is among the states facing challenges in redeveloping aging neighbourhoods.

“Some residential areas are already 70 to 80 years old, and we need to redevelop them,” he said, noting that any issues raised regarding the bill should be given serious consideration.

On Aug 19, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the second and third readings of the Urban Renewal Bill are scheduled for tomorrow, marking a new direction in ensuring urban development in Malaysia remains sustainable, progressive, prosperous, and inclusive.
