KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 31 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has congratulated national mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie–Toh Ee Wei on their victory at the BWF World Badminton Championships 2025 in France today.

In a Facebook post, Ahmad Zahid said the emphatic 21-15, 21-14 win over China’s Jiang Zhen Bang–Wei Ya Xin was the most meaningful gift for all Malaysians in conjunction with the 68th National Day celebration.

“Congratulations to our national heroes. Their fighting spirit and discipline prove that Malaysia can stand tall on the world stage,” he said.

The triumph ended nearly two decades of waiting, as Malaysia’s previous best achievement in the mixed doubles event was a semi-final appearance by Koo Kien Keat–Wong Pei Tty in the 2006 edition in Madrid, Spain.

Ahmad Zahid said the victory was deeply moving for Malaysians who watched the match live, with many admitting they shed tears when the final winning point was secured.

“This is the true spirit of Merdeka! United as one regardless of race and religion, together making the country proud,” he added.

At the same time, he urged all Malaysians to stand firm in supporting and praying for the success of the women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan–M. Thinaah, who are also competing in the final.

He said Pearly and Thinaah’s achievement was still something to be proud of as they were the first Malaysian women’s pair to have entered the finals, and that their hard work and fighting spirit had enhanced Malaysia’s reputation throughout the world.

“You are still champions in the hearts of Malaysians! Congratulations to Pearly Tan-M Thinaah as well as all the players who gave their all for Malaysia. You all are the pride of our country, you give our people strength and inspire the next generation! Malaysia Bangga, Malaysiaku Boleh!” he posted.
