TAWAU, Sept 7 (Bernama) -- A veteran journalist of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) in Tawau, who is facing health problems, received a contribution from the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA today.
The contribution was handed over by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil during his visit to the home of veteran journalist Ismail Lamo in Taman Victoria, Jalan Kuhara here.
Fahmi presented cash assistance and essential items as a token of appreciation for Ismail’s nearly five decades of service and contributions in journalism.
Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also HAWANA 2025 project director.
Ismail, 67, a Bernama stringer since 1979, is suffering from heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. He is the 29th recipient of the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA in Sabah,
He requires follow-up treatment every six months at Queen Elizabeth 1 Hospital in Kota Kinabalu as well as regular check-ups every two or three months at Tawau Hospital.
The Tabung Kasih@HAWANA initiative, implemented by the Communications Ministry through Bernama, was launched in conjunction with National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2023, reflecting the MADANI Government’s concern in promoting the values of compassion, empathy and appreciation towards media practitioners.
To date, 494 media practitioners nationwide have benefited from the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA.
Ismail expressed his gratitude to the Communications Ministry and Bernama for their continued concern in assisting media practitioners in the country in terms of welfare.
“Thank you to the minister for visiting to deliver the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA contribution; I am truly touched,” he said.
Sharing his experience, Ismail said that among the assignments he could never forget were the Abu Sayyaf kidnapping incident in Semporna island and the crash of a Malaysia Airlines Fokker aircraft in Tawau.
He advised young reporters to carry out their duties with integrity and not be swayed by emotions.
