KUCHING, Sept 10 (Bernama) -- Sarawak is exploring the potential of blockchain technology through the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) to develop a strong digital ecosystem in collaboration with government, industry, academia and regulators.
SMA general manager, Datuk Dr Anderson Tiong Ing Heng said the the initiative is aimed at ensuring Sarawak does not miss out on global technological trends while reducing fraud risks by focusing on the real benefits of blockchain.
"The uniqueness of blockchain lies in its decentralised nature, making it more transparent, secure and difficult to manipulate compared to traditional centralised systems.
"In Sarawak, potential applications include university certification, halal certification, health records management and government documents," he told a press conference on the Borneo Blockchain Conference 2025 here, today.
He said globally, countries such as Singapore and South Korea have already adopted blockchain for certification, digital identity and tokenisation of real assets.
“Blockchain today goes far beyond cryptocurrencies. It offers practical applications that can be leveraged by both government and the private sector,” he added.
Meanwhile, Kuching Blockchain Technology Association president, James Gan said the Borneo Blockchain Conference 2025, which will take place on Oct 9 and 10 at the Borneo Cultures Museum, will feature two concurrent sessions featuring policy discussions, industry applications, and technical innovation.
"Through this platform, our goal is simple, to position Kuching as a regional hub for blockchain innovation. But just as importantly, we want to nurture Sarawak’s own talent, our youth, entrepreneurs and academics and give them the opportunity to play a bigger role in the global digital economy," he said.
With the theme "From Rainforest to Blockchain: Building a Greener, Smarter Borneo” the conference is expected to attract over 300 delegates, 14 speakers from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Germany and the United Kingdom.
