KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12 (Bernama) -- Former national footballer of the 1980s era, P. Darmalinggam, died today at the age of 64.

The news was confirmed by Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) deputy president Datuk S. Sivasundaram, who said the deceased breathed his last after being admitted to the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital (HTAR), Klang, for treatment following a fall in the bathroom early today.

“He was a committed player with good discipline, both on and off the field,” he said when contacted today.

Born in 1961, Darmalinggam was among the key figures of the national squad during the 1980s, when Malaysia commanded respect on the Southeast Asian stage with the feared Harimau Malaya team.

Throughout his involvement with the national squad, he was often entrusted by the coaching line-up with carrying vital responsibilities on the field.

His passing marked a significant loss to the local football scene, said Sivasundaram, who is also the chairman of the Amateur Football League (AFL).
