24/09/2025 08:59 PM

KUCHING, Sept 24 (Bernama) -- Sarawak will continue with the construction of a new velodrome in the state, although the facility may not be used for the 2027 SEA Games.

State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the facility is crucial to strengthen the development of cycling, given that Sarawak riders are now among the best in Malaysia.

"So far, 16 events are confirmed will be held in Sarawak, with the possibility of two or three additional events being requested by the participating nations.

"Among the events set to be held in Sarawak during the 2027 SEA Games are archery, aquatics, shooting, bowling, taekwondo, tennis, squash, cricket, Muay Thai and weightlifting. Polo is also being considered as a new event, but if approved, it will be held in Johor,” he said.

He told reporters this after the launch of the 2025 Borneo Games at Stadium Perpaduan here today.

Abdul Karim was previously quoted as saying that the velodrome would be built near the Sarawak Sports Complex here.
