KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 (Bernama) -- Sunway University, in partnership with the United Nations (UN), hosted the Rock the Goals 2025 celebration last night to mark the 10th anniversary of the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015.

The event gathered nearly 1,500 students, staff and guests, including representatives from the UN, United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), European Union, World Health Organisation, as well as ambassadors worldwide.

Sunway University president and vice-chancellor Prof Sibrandes Poppema said the programme reflected the university’s commitment to sustainability and inclusivity.

“We are honoured to host this landmark celebration in partnership with the United Nations. The energy and passion of our students and community reflect Sunway’s commitment to sustainability and inclusivity. Rock the Goals 2025 truly shows how education can inspire action and nurture a generation ready to achieve the SDGs,” he said in a statement issued by Sunway University today.

Meanwhile, United Nations Malaysia Resident Coordinator Robert Gass emphasised that the younger generation should play a vital role in achieving the global goals, noting that their ideas, courage and actions are essential for progress.

“Ten years ago, the world united over the 17 SDGs, but these goals need more than governments and the United Nations, they need your ideas, your courage and your action. Music inspires, unites and reminds us that change is possible.

“Every action, big or small, brings us closer to the world we want. Together, we can achieve the SDGs and let’s keep rocking the goals,” he said in the same statement.

The celebration, inspired by the spirit of punk rock, featured an adaptive fashion show using sustainable fabrics designed by Sunway students, followed by musical performances from local artistes, including the all-autistic band Zimi’J, award-winning vocalist Uriah See and DJ Blink.

The event also received messages of support from influential organisations and figures, including Greenpeace, the Malaysian Mental Health Association and Selangor state assembly members Michelle Ng and Wong Chen.

“Adding to the night’s prestige, world-renowned chef Gordon Ramsay sent a message all the way from London, congratulating Sunway University on its remarkable efforts in advancing the SDGs, saying: 'Sunway, you really are a Campus With A Conscience',” the statement added.

The celebration was supported by generous corporate and community partners, including Ace Canning, Acer, Biscoff, Dyson, Evenesis, Farm Fresh, MD Events, Nattōme, Marigold Peel Fresh, Red Box and Sunway Lagoon - all of whom share Sunway’s commitment to sustainability.

At the same time, Sunway University has also urged other educational institutions to join the movement, underlining how collaboration, innovation and inclusivity can shape a sustainable future.
