KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 (Bernama) -- Recipients of the Rahmah Cash Contribution (STR) from the B40 group will begin enjoying subsidised RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre compared to the current market price of RM2.05 per litre, through the BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) initiative from midnight tonight.
This implementation for the second group builds on the successful first phase, which involved around 300,000 personnel from the Royal Malaysia Police and the Malaysian Armed Forces, proceeding without any issues.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the first day of implementation also served as a stress test for the system’s capacity and for petrol stations that had prepared in advance of broader usage from this Tuesday.
The targeted subsidy initiative, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Sept 22, is being implemented in phases to ensure a smooth transition of the system without sudden spikes in consumption.
After STR recipients, it will be expanded to about 16 million Malaysian citizens aged 16 and above who possess a MyKad and a valid driving licence, starting Sept 30.
Anwar had previously said that the targeted subsidy was the result of reasonable governance efforts and the elimination of financial leakages in the country.
He said these efforts were realised through the MADANI Government’s commitment to ensuring transparent governance, prudent financial management, and combating corruption.
Anwar added that all citizens with a valid driving licence, regardless of income, will automatically qualify for BUDI95.
“This is a privilege reserved only for Malaysians. Savings from the transition to BUDI95 will be redistributed for the benefit of the people, such as through STR and the Basic Rahmah Contribution (SARA).
“However, the government’s focus remains on improving healthcare, education, and basic infrastructure services,” he said.
Every eligible Malaysian will receive a monthly subsidised quota of up to 300 litres of RON95, while e-hailing drivers will be exempted from this quota cap and can apply for additional allocations to ensure the continuity of their livelihood.
As for those not eligible, such as non-citizens, they will purchase RON95 at the unsubsidised price set by the Ministry of Finance, estimated at around RM2.60 per litre.
