5G Coverage In Sarawak's Populated Areas Is At 63.8 Pct - SMA GM

KUCHING, Feb 7 (Bernama) -- The 5G coverage in populated areas in Sarawak reached 63.8 per cent while 4G coverage was at 84.8 per cent as of the fourth quarter of last year.

Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) general manager Datuk Anderson Tiong Ing Heng said that last year, it also strengthened the cybersecurity for the state government's agencies through the CyberSarawak Programme.

"SMA is in the process of implementing data governance management across government agencies. 

"We have also successfully conducted several workshops to share our insights on the importance and effectiveness of data governance," he said when speaking at the SMA Lunar New Year Dinner 2025, which was attended by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg here today.

Tiong also expressed his appreciation to Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) for providing the 5G infrastructure in Sarawak, as well as the telecommunication companies that had worked together with SMA to provide essential telecommunication networks in the state.

Tiong said that for this year, SMA will continue to implement several High-Speed Broadband Rural Networks, with 11 areas in Sarawak identified for the initiative.

"This will involve the installation of about 1,000 kilometres of fibre optics (and) vital for enhancing our telecommunication infrastructure and improving connectivity in under-served areas," he said.

With Sarawak aiming to venture further into the aerospace industry, he said the SMA, together with the State Utility and Telecommunication Ministry, is developing the Sarawak Space Industry Roadmap.

"The roadmap outlines the strategic initiatives to establish Sarawak as a regional leader in space technology, with special emphasis on satellite and satellite manufacturing, developing launch pad facilities and a sustainable space ecosystem," he added.
