MOSCOW, Jan 14 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- Damage estimates from the ongoing wildfires in California have jumped to between US$250 billion and US$275 billion, US weather forecasting service AccuWeather said on Tuesday, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

On Friday, AccuWeather Public Relations Manager Bill Wadell said early damage estimates from the wildfires were between US$135 billion and US$150 billion.

"AccuWeather has updated and increased its preliminary estimate of the total damage and economic loss to between US$250 billion and US$275 billion due to the fast-moving, wind-fuelled fires in Southern California," the service said on X.

Multiple wildfires have broken out in California since Jan 7, forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people, killing at least 24 people and destroying more than 12,300 buildings, including the homes of celebrities. One person has been detained by the Los Angeles Police Department on suspicion of arson that started the Kenneth Fire, one of the devastating wildfires raging in California, NewsNation reported on Friday, citing law enforcement officials.
