15/01/2025 01:31 PM

SEOUL, Jan 15 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- The floor leader of the South Korea’s main opposition Democratic Party said Wednesday that President Yoon Suk Yeol's detention by investigators marked the "first step" in restoring the country's constitutional order and democracy.

Park Chan Dae made the remarks after investigators detained Yoon earlier in the day over his short-lived imposition of martial law last month, Yonhap news agency reported.

"(It) is the first step to restoring the constitutional order and democracy, and upholding the rule of law," Park said in a meeting of party lawmakers.

Park called Yoon a "serious criminal," accusing him of violating the constitution and the law through his martial law declaration on Dec 3.
