GEORGE TOWN, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- The Consumers Association Penang (CAP) has urged the Transport Ministry to enforce more effective and stringent safety measures nationwide to reduce road accidents, particularly during the Chinese New Year celebrations this week.
Its president, Mohideen Abdul Kader, made this call following a concerning rise in road accidents involving heavy vehicles in recent months.
“In 2024 alone, there have been 825 fatal accidents involving such vehicles in just 10 months," he said.
“When we label it an ‘accident,’ we imply it is unavoidable, perpetuating a culture of acceptance. This mindset suggests that nothing can be done to prevent it,” he added in a statement today.
He highlighted factors such as speeding, poor driving habits, driver attitudes, congested roads, unsatisfactory road conditions, and weak enforcement as key contributors to the high accident rates in the country.
Therefore, Mohideen called on policymakers and relevant agencies to prioritise road safety and give urgent attention to this issue.
He also emphasised that encouraging public transport should be an essential part of a broader strategy to reduce accidents.
