UNITEN Introduces New AI-related Degree Programmes

SHAH ALAM, Aug 9 (Bernama) -- Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) has introduced four new programmes, including its first Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Artificial Intelligence (AI), to be offered from September 2025.

The university also unveiled a Master of Data Science and a Diploma in Renewable Energy Technology, aimed at producing skilled talent for industries increasingly driven by automation, data analytics and clean energy.

Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Khairul Salleh Mohamed Sahari said the move is part of UNITEN’s strategy to remain competitive and produce graduates with technical expertise, global outlook and integrity.

“AI and data analytics are key drivers of industrial transformation. We are taking proactive steps to ensure our graduates are job-ready and relevant to industry needs,” he said.

He was speaking to Bernama after launching the programmes with Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) chief executive officer Datuk Ir Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan at UNITEN’s 2025 Open Day here.

UNITEN is also targeting 1,500 to 2,000 enrolments for the four programmes, supported by facilities such as the Tenaga Nasional Hub.

Meanwhile, Megat Jalaluddin said closer industry-university collaboration would give students early exposure and training, producing a workforce ready for the real-world job market.

“We don’t need to wait for students to graduate. They can join us early and we can develop their talent together without relying on external sources,” he said.

The launch is part of UNITEN’s LUMINA Strategic Plan, which targets an increase in student enrolment to 12,000 by 2030 and aims to boost its position in the QS World University Rankings, where it is now placed 551st globally.
