KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Techlympics programme has recorded an average of almost 1.4 million participants annually since its launch in 2022.

Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohamad Yusof Apdal said the programme attracted 1.03 million participants in 2022, 1.82 million in 2023 and 1.31 million in 2024.

“Since June, Malaysia Techlympics has been held in a hybrid format — both physical and online — at various locations nationwide.

“This approach broadens its reach and encourages greater community participation in advancing the country’s science, technology and innovation (STI) agenda,” he said at the opening of the East Coast Zone Malaysia Techlympics 2025 at the Terengganu Science and Creativity Centre here today.

He said the initiative is in line with the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Action Plan (DSTIN) 2021-2030, which emphasises integrated, consistent and inclusive STI programmes to raise public awareness of its role in everyday life.

Malaysia Techlympics features competitions in trending technologies such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, drones, coding and robotics, held at zonal, state and national levels, for participants aged seven to 30.

The East Coast Zone event, held over two days from yesterday, attracted more than 2,000 participants from 120 schools across Terengganu, Kelantan and Pahang.

In line with the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry’s inclusivity principle, Mohamad Yusof said the programme also ensures rural students and communities have access to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

To achieve this, the Techlympics also runs an Outreach Programme in rural areas, he said.

“So far, more than 1,500 students and 1,000 teachers from the East Coast states have taken part in training, including Training of Trainers (ToT) sessions conducted physically and online,” he added
