BANDAR PERMAISURI, Feb 15 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) has distributed RM3 million in cash assistance to residents in three states affected by floods during the recent northeast monsoon.
MRC secretary-general Datuk Danial Iskandar Abdul Rahman said the assistance was channelled to 3,000 families in several districts in Kelantan, Terengganu, and Kedah.
“The districts involved are Hulu Terengganu and Setiu in Terengganu, Pasir Mas and Tumpat in Kelantan, as well as Kubang Pasu and Alor Setar in Kedah.
“Each household will receive RM700, while families with school-going children will receive RM900 in assistance,” he told reporters after the aid handover ceremony for flood victims at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Besut here today.
Also present was the High Commissioner of Canada to Malaysia, Jodi Robinson.
Danial Iskandar stated that in addition to financial aid, MRC provided education and equipment to enhance community preparedness for disasters.
He said MRC had also extended aid by mobilising the local community to carry out cleaning activities in public areas affected by floods.
“MRC also provided water filters and jerry cans to each family to enhance their preparedness in facing future disasters and water treatment training to ensure communities have access to clean water during disasters.
“This programme reflects our commitment not only to providing immediate assistance to those affected but also to empowering communities with the tools and knowledge to face future disasters,” he said.
The programme was carried out with contributions from MRC’s corporate partners, including Coway, IHH Healthcare, Daikin, and CIMB Bank, along with international donors such as the High Commission of Canada in Malaysia, the Swiss Red Cross, the Singapore Red Cross, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
