SUKMA 2026 Expected To Be Held In August - Exco

SHAH ALAM, Jan 20 (Bernama) -- The 22nd Selangor Malaysia Games (Sukma) is expected to be held in August 2026, said state Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi.

He said the decision, which also involved organising the Para Sukma in the same month, was made at the Sukma 2026 Main Organising Committee Meeting chaired by Menteri Besar Datuk Amirudin Shari today.

He said the date was decided after considering several factors, including the World Cup which will be held from June to July, followed by the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games afterwards.

"We see that there is a gap between the organisation of the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, so we have decided on August to organise the Selangor Sukma and Para Sukma next year," he said at a press conference after the meeting here today.

Mohd Najwan said the meeting also listed the Sepang International Circuit and the Petaling Jaya City Council Stadium as two locations that could potentially be used as venues for the opening and closing events of the biennial games.

He said the secretariat was also instructed to go to the ground to identify the readiness of sports infrastructure in the seven districts in Selangor involved in organising the games.

"This is to ensure local authorities and relevant agencies can start upgrading or repairing work immediately so that the infrastructure is ready to be used in 2026," he said.

Mohd Najwan said the organisation of Sukma 2026 involves 28 core sports with five additional sports still in the discussion stage with the National Sports Council and State Sports Councils.

"We want to ensure that the event is held in the spirit of sportsmanship because we do not want the additional sports to give the host an advantage but to open up space for other states to showcase their athletes.

"Among the proposed additional sports are pickleball, chess, equestrian and e-sports," he said.

Regarding the Sukma Games, Mohd Najwan said 10 core sports will be contested with several other additional sports also being discussed.
