DATA POINT, RESEARCH GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR LOCAL UNIVERSITIES - MTDC

15/03/2018 02:10 PM
KUALA LUMPUR, March 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Technology Development Corporation Sdn Bhd (MTDC) today highlighted data point from its group of companies and social research grants that are still available for local universities interested to partake in developing science social projects.

MTDC chief executive officer, Datuk Norhalim Yunus said it was important to note that MTDC provided opportunities for local universities to connect with MTDC's beneficiaries.

"Common problems (of universities) in studying the market and the field are about market samples.

"When the universities contacted the companies and sent the forms to fill in, many companies did not entertain due to no relationship, so with this collaboration, MTDC provides samples or data point for local universities to interact with MTDC beneficiaries."

He said this to Bernama after the presentation of mock cheques to five universities approved for the mini social research grants, here, today.

MTDC has a portfolio of more than 500 companies that it has funded since 1992.

"These are very large samples for research purposes on various aspects, such as past cooperation with universities, commercialisation and technological development, as well as other aspects that may affect the success of the commercialisation process in the country," Norhalim said.

On research topics considered important to MTDC, he said the company preferred studies on the current ecosystem, on the obstacles and challenges faced by young entrepreneurs especially, as well as the adaptation by local companies to face the challenges of Industrial Revolution 4.0.

The International Islamic University Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, University Kuala Lumpur and International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance were awarded a total of RM565,000 in mini social research grants by MTDC today.

Norhalim said for this year, MTDC had a remaining allocation of RM850,000 for social research grants.

"On average, the RM850,000 allocation can benefit eight to 10 universities, depending on the value and scope of a project, which can range from RM50,000 to RM200,000 per project or university," he said.
