KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 3  -- Malaysia, through CyberSecurity Malaysia, has been elected as the chair of the Asia Pacific Computer Emergency Response Team (APCERT) for 2019-2020.

CyberSecurity Malaysia in a statement said the election took place at the APCERT 17th Annual General Meeting and Conference themed, ‘Fostering A Safer Cyberspace Through Partnerships and Collaboration’, in Singapore from Sept 28 to Oct 2.

"CyberSecurity Malaysia, as the chair, will encourage more involvement of members in moving forward while continuing to lead the APCERT Malware Mitigation Working Group, a collaborative initiative among the APCERT and OIC countries to expand malware research, analysis and response to protect the community against malware threats," it said.

This is Malaysia’s second appointment as the chair after the first in 2007.

The four-day event deliberated on the development of the cybersecurity agenda, focusing on building trust among members in the digital economy and enhancing information sharing and cooperation in incident response.

It was hosted by the Singapore Computer Emergency Response Team (SingCERT) from the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (Cyber CSA).

CyberSecurity Malaysia was one of the co-founders of APCERT back in 2002. The agency remains a steering committee member since the inception and will continue until 2020.

The APCERT was established by leading and national Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs) from the economies of the Asia-Pacific region to improve cooperation, response and information sharing among the CSIRTs in the region.

It consists of 30 operational member teams from 21 economies across the Asia-Pacific region including four corporate partners and one liaison partner.
