KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 -- The country’s Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Taiwan’s Food Industry Research and Development Institute (FIRDI).

The agreement aims to develop the halal industry through the creation of halal talent and industry cooperation between both countries.

HDC acting chief executive officer Hairol Ariffein Sahari said Malaysia’s halal export to Taiwan has increased in tandem with the growing demand for halal products particularly food and beverages, halal ingredients, in addition, to an increase in halal awareness.

"Malaysia’s halal export to Taiwan stood at RM750.9 million in 2018, an increase of 4.9 per cent compared to RM715.7 million in 2017.  The market is huge and this is a good opportunity for Malaysian players to expand the market beyond Malaysia,” he said in a statement today.

The MoU was signed by Hairol Ariffein with FIRDI director-general Chii-Cherng Liao in conjunction with the Malaysia-Taiwan Industry Collaboration Summit 2019 in Taipei last week.

FIRDI is a non-profit legal entity in Taiwan conducting research, development and services to promote the food and biotech industries in Taiwan.

The centre is also tasked to accelerate the transformation and upgrading of Taiwan’s food industry.
