PUTRAJAYA, Oct 26 -- Malaysia has recorded 1,240 new COVID-19 cases today, the highest daily tally so far, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
He said the latest development took the cumulative tally for positive cases to 27,805, while the number of active cases with infectivity potential stood at 9,744.
He said that of the new daily total, Sabah continued to record the highest tally, with 927 cases or 74.8 per cent of the total number of cases.
"The number of cases in Sabah has spiked again due to the positive cases in the Kepayan Prison, which recorded 439 cases following more active case detections being carried out in the state.
"Other than that, the mobilisation of health workers has helped efforts to carry out field screening as well as medical treatment,” he said in a press conference on the development of COVID-19 here today.
Dr Noor Hisham also said that a total of 194 cases were recorded in the Klang Valley, of which 120 were from new and existing clusters.
He added that a total of 508 cases, or 41 per cent, were from the Kepayan Prison Cluster, Seberang Perai Prison Cluster, Benteng LD Cluster, Tapah Prison Cluster and Tembok Cluster.
He said all these cases were isolated as they were within the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) areas.
There were also two new imported cases involving foreigners infected overseas who arrived from Russia and Ukraine.
The rest, he said, were local transmissions, with Sabah having 927 cases; Selangor (176); Penang (61); Negeri Sembilan (25); Kuala Lumpur (17); Perak (8); Sarawak (7); Labuan (5); Johor (4); Kedah and Terengganu (three each); and Melaka (two).
According to Dr Noor Hisham, there were 691 recoveries, taking the cumulative recovery tally to 17,825 or 64.1 per cent of the total number of cases.
He added that there are 94 cases currently being treated in the intensive care unit, with 31 requiring ventilator assistance, while seven new fatalities were also recorded.
