SHAH ALAM, 28 Okt -- The Selangor government today handed over eight jet skis and 18 electric bicycles worth RM1.15 million to the Selangor Police to help the force further enhance its patrol for Ops Benteng in the coastal areas in the state.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the contribution was made as the state police needed more vehicles to facilitate patrols and surveillance in the coastal and bush areas.

“We found that among the factor for the new wave spread of COVID-19 is from illegal immigrants who are detained and the virus then spread in the prison. Hence, the need to enhance patrol along the coastal areas to prevent infiltration by immigrants sneaking into the country.

“Following discussion with the police, we decided on the electric bicycles because they are light, rechargeable and the speed is similar to a motorcycle and could be used on beach areas, while the jet skis will be used to further strengthen patrol at sea to facilitate detection of boats used to smuggle immigrants into the country,” he told reporters today after presenting the jet skis and electric bicycles  to Selangor Police chief Datuk Noor Azam Jamaludin in a brief ceremony here.

At the same event, Amirudin also presented 100 units of personal protective equipment, 500 face shields, 300 pairs of gloves, 200 gowns, 500 face masks, 500 bottles of hand sanitiser and 200 aprons to the Selangor Prisons Department.

The contribution was received by Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Prisons director Datuk Mohd Sakeri Dollah.

Meanwhile, Noor Azam said the police was thankful to the state government for the contributions.

He said the electric bicycles would be used by the General Operation Force (GOF), which has 18 guard posts in the coastal areas of selangor, while the jet skis would be for the Marine Operation Force (MOF).
