KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 -- National lawn bowls head coach, Zuraidi Puteh has commended the sterling feats of several national young players at the Mixed Pairs Lawn Bowls Closed Championship at the National Lawn Bowls Centre in Bukit Kiara which ended today.
He said the outstanding display exhibited by young players such as Muhammad Idham Amin Ramlan in his 20’s in the tournament which began on Nov 18 clearly proved the national squad has a talented backup team capable of replacing senior players in future.
"The performance of Muhammad Idham was just amazing and it depended on the will of the individual player excel in competition and training,” he told reporters at the end of the championship.
“We as the coach could only provide consistent training to raise the standard of players but it is up to them to prove themselves,” said Zuraidi.
In this regard, Muhammad Idham was happy with his game at the championship as he has not competed for so long due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I did not expect to defeat several senior players and I guess the success today could be attributed to my combination with senior player Nurul Alyani Jamil as we have been paired together in the 2018 Asian Championships in China,” said Muhammad Idham who collected a gold medal at the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines.
Sharing the same view was Nurul Alyani who described the tournament as important to boost their respective perfomances in the absence of competition during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Muhammad Idham and Nurul Alyani emerged champions after collecting 16 points to take home a souvenir and shared RM1,000 cash.
The pair of Izzat Shameer and Siti Zalina Ahmad and Fairul Izwan Abd Muin and Shafila Omar were tied with 12 points but Izzat and Siti Zalina were placed second on the difference in the margin of points collected in each game.
Izzat and Siti Zalina as well as Fairul Izwan and Shafila, took home a souvenir each and shared RM600 and RM400 cash respectively.
The prizes were presented by Malaysian Lawn Bowls Federation acting president, Tengku Datin Seri Noor Hazah Tengku Abdul Aziz Shah.
