Reasonable to postpone Undi 18 - MIC President

27/03/2021 07:38 PM

SUNGAI SIPUT, March 27 -- The Election Commission’s (EC) decision to postpone the implementation of voting at the age of 18 (Undi 18) and automatic registration is reasonable, Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) president Tan Sri S.A.Vigneswaran said.

"Actually there are many things we have to consider (before implementing Undi 18), so let’s not just try to get the support of youth, giving them the opportunity to vote is good but we have to think of the pros and cons when it is fully implemented.

"It is better for us to champion the issue of education, which is faced with uncertainty currently due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” he told reporters after officiating the '1 Force Crime' programme organised by the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (MITRA) here today.

Vigneswaran said the important thing is that whatever decision made would benefit all quarters, including political parties and that it should not be implemented in a rush.

EC chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh had earlier been reported to have said that automatic registration and voting at the age of 18 could only be implemented on Sept 1 next year as the country was now still in the midst of managing the COVID-19 pandemic, which had affected the commission’s planning and preparations.
