KUALA LUMPUR, April 2 -- The Para-Archery European Cup in Nove Mesto nad Metuji in the Czech Republic from July 5-11 will be the last chance for five national para archers to qualify for the Tokyo Paralympics in August.
National para archery coach Marzuki Zakaria said they are recurver archers Hasihin Sanawi and Jennyla Kueh (recurve); and compound archers G. Daneshen, Norsaadah Wahab and Norjannaton Abd Jalil.
Marzuki said that S. Suresh (recurve) and Wiro Julin (compound), who have already qualified for the Tokyo Paralympics, will also compete in the Czech Republic meet as a warm up to their Tokyo campaign.
“I hope all the athletes will secure approval from the National Security Council (MKN) and the National Sports Council (NSC) to compete in the Czech Republic.
“The opportunity to compete there does depend on the current COVID-19 situation, otherwise only Suresh and Wiro will be able to represent the country in Tokyo,” he said when contacted by Bernama today.
Marzuki said the national para archery squad’s appearance in the Czech Republic would be their first since the Asia Para Archery Championship in Bangkok, Thailand in October 2019.
Suresh booked a spot to Tokyo in June 2019 after winning the men’s Open recurve event at the World Archery Para Championships in Hertogenbosch, Holland, while Wiro qualified after winning silver in men’s compound at the Asian Para Archery Championships in Bangkok, Thailand in October 2019.
Meanwhile, Marzuki said that recurve archers Suresh, Hasihin and Jennyla have been invited to attend a simulation meet with other national archers at Bukit Jalil on April 7-8.
This is to test their capabilities as they have not taken part in any competitions since the simulation meet last November.
Marzuki was also satisfied with the commitment shown by his archers during training sessions since returning to the training camp at the Malaysian Paralympic Sports Excellence Centre in Kampung Pandan, here in early March.
The Tokyo Paralympic Games will be from Aug 24 to Sept 5.
