RM31.5 mln skybridge in Kota Kinabalu to be opened to public on Sept 9

KOTA KINABALU, Sept 3  -- The city’s long-delayed RM31.5 million Skybridge has finally been completed and will be opened to the public on Sept 9.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor, who officially opened the Skybridge today, said the 400-meter pedestrian bridge linking Oceanus, Api-Api Centre and Asia City here would benefit the public, especially in terms of convenience and also safety for pedestrians crossing the road in the area.

“The completion of the project shows that the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah government is a proactive and caring government,” he told reporters after officiating the Skybridgetoday.

During the previous state government’s administration, the project was abandoned indefinitely after work stopped in 2018 following the insolvency of its developer.

Earlier this year, Hajiji visited the site and immediately announced a RM4.7 million allocation from the state government to complete the project.

The project was funded by the Prime Minister’s Department Public Private Partnership Unit (UKAS) through a facilitation fund agreement between the Government of Malaysia, Malaysia Development Bank and Sunsea Development Sdn Bhd on Feb 9, 2017.

Meanwhile, Hajiji said the state government had no qualms discussing issues such as the special motion to enact a new health law mooted by opposition assemblymen if it was for the benefit of the people of Sabah.

“It is up to the State Assembly Speaker to accept the special motion, we have no problem to discuss and implement what is necessary and good for the rakyat of Sabah,” he said.

He was asked to comment on the special motion submitted by Kadamaian Assemblyman Datuk Ewon Benedict and his Luyang counterpart Ginger Phoong for the State Assembly to discuss the enactment of a new law on the prevention and control of diseases.

The next Sabah State Assembly sitting is scheduled to be from Sept 21-23.
