KANGAR, Feb 15 -- For the first time ever, Perlis will be playing host to the Golden Glove Championship and the 2022 National Youth Boxing Championship at the Futsal Arena of the Tuanku Syed Putra Sports Complex here from May 23 to 29.
Perlis State Boxing Association vice-president Rosli Salim said it was hoped that all boxers, especially the young ones, would take this opportunity to participate in the championships organised by the Malaysian Boxing Federation (PTM) in collaboration with the Perlis State Boxing Association.
“This is also a good platform to scout for young talents for higher-level tournaments and or even to represent their states or the country at national and international championships,” he told Bernama here.
A total of 13 weight categories would be opened for elite boxers (aged 22 to 40), 10 weight categories for teenage boxers (aged 17 to 18) and six categories for female boxers.
The championships will see participation from 14 state teams, as well as boxers from Armed Forces Sports Council, Police (PDRM) Sports Council and National Sports Council (NSC).
Meanwhile, Perlis boxing coach, Hamzah Abdullah said his team is ready to rumble after not participating in any tournament since the COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020.
“This is the best opportunity to test our young boxers’ skills and capabilities,” he said, adding such tournaments were last held in 2019.
