PADANG BESAR, March 15  (Bernama) -- The Perlis Inland Port (PIP) project is expected to contribute RM2.8 billion to the state’s gross domestic product (GDP) and create 500 high value jobs in Perlis by 2030.

Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) chief executive Mohammad Haris Kader Sultan said the project is also set to expand trade by 50 per cent in the border area between Malaysia and Thailand via Padang Besar.

“This project is a public-private partnership (PPP), between the Perlis government and Mutiara Perlis Sdn Bhd, together with the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER), whereby the NCIA will provide infrastructure components to support the development of PIP.

“PIP plays a very important role as strategic infrastructure which will complete logistics and trade in NCER," he said a the launching of PIP and 'Bonded Road' here today.

The launching ceremony was graced by Raja Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail and also attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Menteri Besar Perlis Datuk Seri Azlan Man.

Mohammad Haris said the PIP project is part of NCIA’s effort to support the national economic recovery plan post-pandemic in line with the NCER Strategic Development Plan 2021-2025.

The PIP is also a major component of the integrated development in Chuping Valley, which encompasses  Chuping Valley Industrial Area (CVIA) and Chuping Agro Valley (CAV).

"All these projects will open a new page for the transformation of Perlis into an economy that is grounded in cross-border trade and benefit regional cooperation entities such as the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) and ASEAN," he added.
