HANOI, May 13 (Bernama) -- Disappointment was clearly etched in the faces of the national men’s artistic gymnastics team after they lost out on the chance of at least a bronze medal in the team event in the 31st South East Asian (SEA) Games at Quan Ngua Gymnasium here today.
Just when the team thought they had at least a bronze in hand, a protest lodged by a rival team deprived them of any hope of securing a medal.
Instead, the six-member team - Luqman Al Hafiz Zulfa, Ng Chun Chen, Zulbahrin Mat Asri, Tan Fu Jie, Teoh Chuen Feng and Muhammad Sharul AimySkuad - coached by Ng Shu Liang, ended up with an overall score of 295.850 points.
The gold went to hosts Vietnam, with 331.250 points, while the Philippines and Singapore took silver and bronze, with 301.600 points and 297.650 points respectively.
Ng told reporters later that he was still satisfied with the performance of his charges, most of whom were making their debut at the SEA Games, even though they missed out on a medal.
He added that their performance was a positive sign that they had potential to produce better results in upcoming championships.
“Our focus after this is the individual all-around event. Luqman and Chun Chen, both who are making their first SEA Games appearance, have shown good performances and I hope they will do their best in that event,” Ng said.
