Saniy Syahmi misses out on National BMX title, Asian ticket

KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 (Bernama) -- National rider Saniy Syahmi Mohd Shafiee missed out on the national title after crashing in the men's elite race of the National BMX Championship 2022 at the National BMX Track in Bandar Baru Nilai, Negeri Sembilan today.

In one fell swoop, the 21-year-old rider was also denied a ticket to the Asian BMX Cycling Championship (BMX ACC) in September.

In today's competition, Saniy Syahmi, who was leading seven other riders, failed to reach the finish line when he fell at the second last corner due to a collision with Amer Akbar Anuar who had tumbled earlier.

Malaysia National Cycling Federation (MNCF) president, Datuk Abu Samah Abd Wahab said it would do something to soften the blow for the two Terengganu Hanelang riders.

"It is quite unfortunate when you fall while leading a race. Even if you are the choice participant, the gold medal will belong to someone else if you fall," he said in a statement from MNCF today.

Singapore rider Mas Ridzwan Mohammad Ali managed to grab the gold with a time of 36.011 secs, followed by Sarawak’s Mohamad Faris Mohd Nashari in second place (36.196s) and was declared the national champion.

The bronze medal went to another Sarawak rider, Yohannes Larenza Anak Meahian who recorded a time of 36.323s.

In the women's category, Terengganu Hanelang rider, Eddyna Nasuhar Zainal Abidin emerged as the national champion after winning gold, while Selangor Sukma squad rider, Siti Natasha Mohd Basri and Johor OSBMX representative, Siti Qamariyana Mt Sali won the silver and bronze respectively.
