KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) is drafting a working paper to apply for incentives for the men’s hockey squad to prepare for the 2023 World Cup in India from Jan 13 to 29.
Its president, Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said the funds would be a step to boost the squad’s performance before they compete at the championship.
He said the application would be presented to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and the Finance Ministry through the Youth and Sports Ministry.
“This is not incentive to provide money to players, but additional funds that can be used by the MHC for the national squad to boost its competitiveness. This few months are very important and critical months for them, and we need the support from government.
“Head coach A. Arul Selvaraj and team manager Datuk Mirnawan Nawawi have made several requests that the national squad needs a physical coach…for instance, India took in foreign expertise,” he said at a media conference at the Bukit Jalil National Hockey Stadium today.
Subahan said the confederation was currently calculating the amount of incentive needed to improve performance, not only for the men’s senior squad but also the women’s and junior squads.
He also hoped that the effort would boost the standing of the Malaysian Tigers, who are currently ranked 10th in the world, after taking part in the prestigious tournament.
Meanwhile, Subahan said the MHC, with the cooperation of the Royal Selangor Club, will organise the 9-a-Side Veteran’s International Hockey Championship at the Royal Selangor Club, Bukit Kiara from Nov 18 to 20.
He said that an under-12 tournament for children will be held and would be open to foreign hockey clubs in conjunction with the veteran’s championship.
