Yong Qi splashes her way to victory for Malaysia’s second AUG swim gold

UBON RATCHATHANI (Thailand), July 27 (Bernama) -- Ong Yong Qi produced an outstanding performance to bag a second gold medal for the national swimming camp at the ongoing ASEAN University Games (AUG) 2022 today.

Yong Qi, 20, shone the brightest when she came out tops in the women’s 200-metre (m) butterfly event as the other seven finals at the Ban Yang Noi Campus failed to produce the desired results.

The Johor-born Yong Qi clocked 2:18.45 seconds (s) to beat Indonesia’s Adidnda Kirana (2:18.63s) and Thailand’s Panthira Subha-amorn (2:22.26s).

“So happy to have contributed a gold medal to the national contingent today. Although my time in the final was not so good, it was enough for me to come out tops. This AUG is part of my preparations for next year’s Cambodia SEA Games,” she said.

Malaysia won the first swimming gold yesterday through Low Zheng Yong in the men’s 400m freestyle.

In the men’s 200 freestyle final today, Malaysia ended up with a silver and bronze through Welson Sim and Terence Ng Shin Jian respectively as Indonesian Joe Aditya Wijaya Kurniawan romped home for the gold medal.

In the men’s 200m butterfly final, Zheng Yong could only manage a bronze, with Thailand’s Wongcharoen Navaphat taking gold and Joe Aditya settling for bronze.

There was also heartbreak for Malaysia in the men’s and women’s 4x100m freestyle relay finals.

In the women’s showdown, Malaysia had to settle for silver behind Thailand, with Singapore taking bronze.

In the men’s final, Malaysia also settled for silver behind Indonesia, with Thailand clinching bronze.

The swimming camp has so far contributed two golds, five silvers and two bronzes to the national contingent at the 20th edition of the AUG here.
