UBON RATCHATHANI (Thailand), July 28 (Bernama) -- The 20th edition of the ASEAN University Games (AUG) was officially opened in a lively atmosphere at the Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University Stadium here today.
The opening ceremony of the Games, themed Games for Sustainability, was held with a touch of difference, beginning with an interesting performance involving the country’s traditional dance and music.
The national contingent, led by Prof Dr Mohd Fo'ad Sakdan, then joined in the march past, with footballer Muhammad Aliff Nazmi Shaaini being given the honour of being the flag-bearer.
The other participating teams are Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, Vietnam and Myanmar.
The event continued with the opening speech of the Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, Prof Dr Supachai Pathumnakul.
This was followed by a parade of the ASEAN University Sports Council (AUSC) flag and the oath-taking ceremony.
The more than 1,000 spectators at the opening ceremony were then treated to a colourful and spectacular fireworks display.
The 275-strong national contingent are competing in 19 out of the 23 sports being contested in this edition and are targeting 35 gold medals.
As of the third day of the Games, Malaysia have bagged 16 golds, 22 silvers and 12 bronzes.
