TAWAU, Aug 6 (Bernama) -- Citizens in the Tawau and Kalabakan districts are asked to enliven this year's National Month celebration by decorating their homes and business premises with the Jalur Gemilang as a reflection of love for the country.

Sabah Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy said all segments of the community should be proud to fly the Jalur Gemilang at their homes and shops as the flag symbolises national sovereignty and identity.

Andi Muhammad Suryady who is also a Tanjung Batu state assemblyman, said the awareness on the significance of flying the Jalur Gemilang should be in the hearts of the people during Merdeka Month.

"Since the recent launch of National Month and Jalur Gemilang Flying by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, I have seen more and more people in Tawau and Kalabakan flying the (Jalur Gemilang)," he said.

He said this when launching the Merdeka @ Komuniti Pelancaran Jalur Gemilang programme in Kampung Tanjung Batu Darat here today.

Also present to distribute flags to shopkeepers was Tawau information officer Azuary Abdul Azis who warned the public not to be deceived by dubious information on social media which can threaten national security.

In ARAU, citizens need to express their patriotism by flying at least one Jalur Gemilang in their homes or shops, said Perlis Information and Communication Technology Committee chairman Rozieana Ahmad.

Rozieana said citizens need to remember the sacrifices of freedom fighters who died in the quest for independence.

"Thankfully, this year we are able to celebrate the 65th National Day face-to-face together after two years in the grip of COVID-19," she said at the launch of Kembara Merdeka Keluarga Malaysia (KMKM 2022) convoy at the Arau Parliamentary constituency in Arau public housing (RPA) today.

Also present were director of the Perlis Information Department (JaPen) Azrul Hasan, K16 Malaysian Motoring Club advisor Datuk Seri Shamsul Baharin Mohd Hanafiah and chairman of RPA Rukun Tetangga Area (KRT) Mohd Khalil Ahmad.

She said among the programmes to highlight the Merdeka spirit are poetry recitals and singing of patriotic songs by local residents.

"The Pentarama team from Information Department also enhanced our programme with awareness of celebrating National Day," she said.
