Islamic Solidarity Games kicks off in Turkiye

KONYA (Türkiye), Aug 10 (Bernama) -- Türkiye's athletes had a smooth start at the fifth Islamic Solidarity Games, which opened here on Tuesday, Xinhua reported.

Alperen Karahan claimed the gold medal with 20.46 metres in the men's shot put and Emel Dereli won the women's title with 17.25 metres. Necati Er added a gold in the men's triple jump with 16.73 metres, while Yasemin Can came first in the men's 10,000m race with a time of 32 minutes 34.33 seconds.

Birhanu Balew of Bahrain prevailed in the men's 5,000m race with a time of 13 minutes 51.64 seconds, while Ali Idow Hassan of Somalia took the spoils in the men's 800m in 1:49.04.

Sumeyye Boyaci also won for Türkiye in the S4-5 200 metres women's para swimming freestyle.

A total of 4,200 athletes from 55 countries and regions are competing across 24 events at the Games, which runs until Aug 18.

The first Islamic Solidarity Games was held in 2005 in Saudi Arabia.
