ARAU, Sept 26 (Bernama) -- The amendment to the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) Act 1965 (Amendment 2022) (Act 141) gazetted on Sept 6 has given FAMA the authority to play a role in the distribution of livestock commodities, says FAMA director-general Datuk Zainal Abidin Yang Razalli.
He said through the amendment, farmers would also have the opportunity to market their livestock products through agencies under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAFI).
"Since the National Livestock Development Board Act was dissolved in 1983, no agency has taken over that role (livestock marketing). For example, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country, there were several domestic livestock commodity markets affected.
"Among the livestock commodities affected were the ‘ayam kampung’ or free-range chicken and quail markets,” he told reporters after officiating the closing of the New Breed Marketing Entrepreneur (NBME) course at Politeknik Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin (PTSS), Perlis which was attended by 350 students and staff of the institution.
Also present were PTSS director Abdul Malek Hassan and Perlis FAMA director Mohd Sharizan Mansor.
Earlier, Zainal Abidin also launched ‘K-Shoppe’ and the ‘Kopi Kampus’ cafe at PTSS.
