FAM-MSN Project Squad to play in Reserve League

30/09/2022 02:07 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 (Bernama) -- The FAM-MSN Project Squad will continue to play in the Reserve League despite showing a less than satisfactory performance in the 2022 Premier League competition.

National Sports Council (MSN) director-general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail said this is important to give the players a second chance to prove their abilities since they are products of the Mokhtar Dahari Academy under the National Football Development Programme (NFDP).

He said the performance of the FAM-MSN Project Squad was not a priority because what was more important was to develop their talents so that they can be recruited by any club in the Malaysian League (M-League).

“What we want more now is for the players to be further developed and helped so that they can be recruited by other squads or states to play for their teams,” he told a press conference after the signing ceremony of the sponsorship agreement between MSN and TudungPeople International Sdn Bhd on Thursday.

However, in the future, he said the MSN working committee will hold discussions with the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to restructure the programmes in the squad.

The FAM-MSN Project Squad is currently at the bottom of the Premier League with only eight points after 18 league games this season.

Last July, the Malaysian Football League (MFL) confirmed that the M-League competition would go through a restructuring that saw the participation of 18 teams in the Super League competition while the Premier League will be temporarily suspended starting from the 2023 season.

The restructuring also saw the introduction of Reserve League from next season involving all 18 Super League 2023 teams who need to prepare their respective Under-23 (U-23) squads for the competition, with the FAM-MSN Project squad as the 19th team.

Among others, it aimed at giving the players more playing minutes and competitive matches, as well as increasing the commercial value of local tournaments which will benefit all parties.
