YPASM renamed Sultan Mizan Antarctic Research, Environmental Sustainability Foundation

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 (Bernama) -- Sultan Mizan Antarctic Research Foundation (YPASM), established 10 years ago, has been officially renamed as Sultan Mizan Antarctic Research and Environmental Sustainability Foundation with the consent of Terengganu Sultan, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin.

Sultan Mizan said the name change was in line with the Environment and Water Ministry’s (KASA) intention to expand the functions of the foundation to enable the importance of involvement and research in Antarctica to be translated to the public through the concept of planetary health.

“This concept stresses on holistic solutions that will explain the connectivity between the polar region and Malaysia as a tropical country, for instance, through the climate change issue, the impact of rising sea levels and the El Nino and La Nina phenomena on the national level.

“I understand the expansion of the foundation’s functions will not stunt the development of the national Antarctic agenda. The government through KASA has stated its commitment to continuing the Antarctic agenda as agreed by the Cabinet previously to turn Malaysia into an Antarctic Treaty System country,” Sultan Mizan said during his speech at the 10th YPASM anniversary dinner here tonight, in the presence of Environment and Water Minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

Sultan Mizan also expressed his confidence that the foundation would achieve greater success in the future under the leadership of KASA and its board of trustees.

The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry established the foundation in 2012 to achieve the goal of conserving Antarctica and contribute to solving global problems, including climate change. The foundation was placed under the supervision of KASA in 2020.

Meanwhile, Tuan Ibrahim said that the expansion of the foundation’s functions would provide an advantage for the ministry to be more active in programmes and activities revolving around planetary health.

“The ministry will also be involved in ensuring the foundation is well represented nationally and globally,” he added.
