MELAKA, Nov 16 (Bernama) -- An undergraduate at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) is thankful to be among the recipients of tablets under the PerantiSiswa Keluarga Malaysia initiative as he does not have to burden his mother to purchase a new device for him.

Bachelor of Computer Engineering Technology (Computer Systems) student Tommy Lee Chuin Jie, 24, said his mother, Yeo Soo Lee, 56, only depended on her income as a seamstress but always strived to provide the best educational tools for her children.

The eldest of two siblings who hails from Batu Pahat, Johor, said that he used to rely on a second-hand laptop he purchased in 2018 to complete his daily assignments.

“However, I would use my mobile phone to access lecture notes. Since the notes are too many, this device makes it easier for me to read them,” he told Bernama here.

Lee is among 5,444 students from the B40 group in UTeM eligible to receive the PerantiSiswa Keluarga Malaysia tablets, with 5,223 people having received the device to date.

For Nur Faizah Mohammad, 21, the tablet enables her to access lecture notes and complete her assignments anywhere as it is lightweight and easy to carry.

The Bachelor of Technopreneurship student said before this, she would print out all her lecture notes to bring to class to facilitate reference and the learning process.

“Now, I can save money because I can download the notes to the tablet and no longer have to print them out,” said Nur Faizah, who received the device in September.

A Bachelor of Technology in Industrial Machining student, U. Sivnes, 23, said the tablet was very much needed and useful because it made it easier for him to complete assignments that involved a lot of design work, especially for the industrial design subject.

He said the tablet, equipped with a keyboard and stylus pen, allows him to make design sketches directly onto the device without having to do rough sketches on paper.

As such, he thanked the government for creating a programme that offers quality devices.
