ISKANDAR PUTERI, Nov 20 (Bernama) -- Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) has advanced to the Malaysia Cup finals for the second consecutive season after beating Sabah FC 4-1 on aggregate in tonight’s second leg semifinal match at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium here tonight.
The Southern Tigers beat Sabah 3-1 in tonight’s match, with Bergson Da Silva (35th minute), Fernando Forestieri (41st minute) and Muhammad Syafiq Ahmad (injury time) scoring, a decisive victory following their narrow 1-0 win in the first leg at Likas Stadium last Tuesday.
JDT’s first goal came from a Bergson header off a La'vere Corbin-ong cross, and was his sixth in the Malaysia Cup campaign.
Six minutes later, Forestieri scored thanks to a long ball by Mohd Afiq Fazail that landed neatly at Arif Aiman Mohd Hanapi’s feet in the penalty box, allowing Forestieri to then find the net.
Sabah then managed to retaliate in the second half, scoring through an effort by Taiki Kagayama in the 47th minute.
Finally at the end of the match, Muhammad Syafiq made it 3-1 for JDT by tucking in a cross in injury time.
Nine-time Super League champions JDT, has won the Malaysia Cup in 2017 and 2019 since the club was founded in 2013. Last year JDT lost 0-2 to Kuala Lumpur (KL) City FC, while the 2020 edition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
