KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- A total of 80 teams from six countries will compete in the 16th Datuk Chu Ah Nge International Junior Soccer tournament at the Royal Selangor Club in Bukit Kiara here this weekend (Dec 3-4).
A total of 56 local teams as well as nine from Singapore, Vietnam (five) Maldives (four), Indonesia (four) and Thailand (two) will compete in the five categories - Under-8, Under-10, Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16.
Organising committee chairman Datuk Gerald Rakish Kumar said the annual tournament, also known as the 2022 Datuk Chu International, was introduced in 2005 to provide a competitive environment for all age groups in the RSC Development Programme before it grew rapidly and managed to attract the participation of other regional outfits.
“The main objective of this tournament is to foster fellowship through friendly competitive spirit among the football fraternity within Malaysia and neighbouring countries with clubs and academies that place an emphasis on grassroots development.
“Our hope, as the organiser, is for this tournament to unearth special talents from among the 960 players to continue the legacy of these special people,” he told reporters when met after the launch here today.
The tournament, organised in a league format, is named after one of the past presidents of the club, the late Datuk Seri Chu Ah Nge, who sponsored the Challenge Trophy and provided financial support when it was introduced in 2005.
