PHNOM PENH, May 10 (Bernama) -- The news in brief involving Malaysian athletes at the 2023 SEA Games here today:

 

WOMEN’S T-TENNIS SQUAD IN HISTORIC FINAL AFTER 30 YEARS

 

THE national women’s table-tennis squad pulled off a surprise advance to the final stage after 30 years in the team event at the 2023 SEA Games here.

In the semi-finals at Morodok Ping Pong Hall today, the Malaysian team consisting of Karen Lyne, Alice Chang and Ho Ying defeated Vietnam 3-1.

In the final scheduled for tomorrow morning, Malaysia will face Thailand who eliminated Singapore 3-0 in the other semi-final.

The last time the Malaysian women’s team managed to qualify for the final was in the 1993 edition in Singapore. Malaysia ended with the silver medal at the Games.

 

NO SECOND GOLD FROM SNOOKER DOUBLES

 

The national snooker squad’s desire to pocket another gold at the 2023 SEA Games was not achieved when it ran aground in the semi-finals of the men’s 6-reds doubles event.

Malaysia represented by Moh Keen Hoo and Lim Kok Leong had to concede to the Thai pairing of Kritsanut Lertsattayathorn and Wattana Pu-ob-orm 2-4 in the event that took place at Aeon Sen Sok Mall here today.

Yesterday, Moh created a sensational comeback to win the gold medal in the men's 6-reds singles when he fought back to defeat Laos representative Sitthideth Sabieng 5-3.

 

BRONZE RING FOR BOXER ABDUL QAIYUM

 

NATIONAL boxer Muhammad Abdul Qaiyum Ariffin had to settle for a bronze medal at the 2023 SEA Games when he was stumped in the semi-finals today.

In the action held at the Chroy Changvar Convention Centre, the 21-year-old Malaysian boxer lost 1-4 to Filipino Rogen Siaga Ladon in the men's 51 kg bout.

According to the format of the competition, boxers who lose in the semi-finals will share the bronze medal.
