10 Walls Must Be Torn Down To Ensure Effectiveness Of 'segulai Sejalai' - Jeniri

KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 (Bernama) -- Ten walls must be torn down to ensure the effectiveness of the unity slogan ‘Segulai Sejalai’ announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday.

National Council of Professors senior fellow Datuk Dr Jeniri Amir said the 10 walls comprised ethnic differences, religion, social class, education, language, digital generation, gender, political federalism, regional class differences and social usage.

“I believe that if there is commitment and awareness from all quarters to practice good values and do away with the negatives such as prejudice and ethnocentrism, the slogan can further strengthen the meaning of unity,” he said in Bernama TV’s Malaysia Petang Ini programme titled ‘Segulai Sejalai, Perpaduan Disemai?’ today.

Yesterday, Anwar said that ‘Segulai Sejalai’, an Iban phrase which translates into ‘together in unity’, will be adopted as a nationwide slogan for unity.

Jeniri said it would take some time to see the effectiveness of the phrase as it requires a continuous process, adding that it should not be placed solely on the government’s shoulders.

“All quarters must work together and play their roles through a multi-strategy approach involving the government and the private sectors as well as the community,” he said.

In addition, he said cultivating the spirit of unity should start at home and school to make the Malaysia MADANI concept a success and unite all races in this country.
