KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian eHailing Coalition (GEM) is confident that the establishment of the GIG Economy Commission of Malaysia (SEGiM) can improve the social protection and welfare of gig industry workers.

GEM said the establishment was a necessity to allow the government to assist e-hailing and p-hailing workers more effectively and efficiently.

“We are confident the Unity Government can eradicate all long-term issues and problems in regulating the ecosystem of the gig economy industry comprehensively and holistically through the establishment of SEGiM,” it said in a statement today.

GEM said that during the ‘Temu Anwar bersama Belia P-Hailing’ in Petaling Jaya yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his commitment, which was seen to be in line with the proposal for the establishment of the commission by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi previously.

Ahmad Zahid, when delivering the closing presidential speech at the 2023 UMNO General Assembly in June, said Anwar had basically agreed with UMNO’s proposal for the establishment of SEGiM.

On July 17, he was also reported to have said that the prime minister is expected to announce the establishment of the commission during the tabling of Budget 2024 in Parliament in October.
