SINGAPORE, Dec 5 (Bernama) -- Surbana Jurong Pte Ltd, a Singaporean urban, infrastructure and managed service consulting firm, today inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Invest Sarawak to develop cooperation and partnership to deepen energy transition, transformation and decarbonisation initiatives in Sarawak.

In a joint statement, Surbana Jurong and Invest Sarawak said the MoU was signed at the Singapore Pavilion being convened at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The parties said the key aims of the cooperation would include identifying challenges and opportunities present for Sarawak’s industrial landscape.

This would comprise green economy opportunities via enhancing and developing skillsets of the people of Sarawak for new opportunities, as well as the implementation of energy transition and industrial decarbonisation projects integrated with greenfield and brownfield industrial activities, among others.

“One of the key features of the partnership includes the joint establishment of an industrial park venture to implement best-in-class standards in the planning, development and future management of greenfield industrial parks that prioritise decarbonisation and sustainable power sources.

“The partners would identify carbon capture opportunities, especially in the power generation sector, such as potential carbon utilisation and sequestration projects,” they said.

Surbana Jurong managing director of energy and industrial and global renewable lead Tan Wooi Leong said Sarawak’s geography with its rich renewable and natural resources would present renewable energy engineers with tremendous opportunities to reimagine a net zero future.

“The company is excited to work with the state of Sarawak to maximise the value of decarbonisation across power generation and hard-to-abate sectors, which is increasingly driving the agenda in Sarawak’s future economic development and industrial positioning,” he said.

Invest Sarawak chief executive officer Timothy Ong Wye Ern said the partnership with a focus on decarbonisation would open up fresh opportunities for Sarawak to attract and sustain a steady flow of investors.

“That the partnership looks to upskilling talent in renewables certainly bolsters confidence in Sarawak’s economic prospects,” he added.
