BUKIT MERTAJAM, Feb 9 (Bernama) -- Penang Zakat (ZPP) recorded RM159.7 million in tithe collection last year, which comprised RM152.86 million of property tithe and RM6.84 million personal tithe.

Penang Islamic Religious Council (MAINPP) president Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid said even though the amount of zakat collected did not reach the targeted RM166.7 million, it exceeded 95 per cent of the target.

He explained that this was mainly due to a decrease in zakat contributors from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), as there were no more targeted withdrawals such as i-Sinar and i-Citra.

“Looking at the performance, last year’s property tithe collection increased by 6.48 per cent from RM143.54 million in the previous year, while personal tithe also saw an increase from RM6.58 million in 2022.

“Therefore, the five per cent deviation is due to no withdrawals in 2023, which previously involved zakat payments,” he told a press conference here today.

Also present were MAINPP deputy president Datuk Dr Roslan Ahmad and ZPP chief executive officer Datuk Amran Hazali.

Mohamad also announced that the new nisab threshold for property tithe would be RM24,200, compared to last year’s RM21,650.

Meanwhile, he said ZPP distributed RM173.39 million to tithe recipients last year, an increase of 11.74 per cent from RM155.172 million in 2022.
