Sibu To Become Hub For Green Methanol Bunkering Facilities For International Shipping Lines

SIBU, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- Sibu, which has established itself as a centre for shipbuilding and ship repair, successfully penetrating the international market, is poised to serve as a hub for bunkering facilities in Sarawak, supplying green methanol to international shipping lines.

Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg attributed this achievement to Sarawak's efforts in producing green methanol which is in high demand globally as the world shifts towards green energy.

He noted that shipping companies are increasingly transitioning from oil-powered engines to those fueled by green methanol, mirroring the trend in international banking where green energy usage is considered in loan approvals.

"With Sibu now producing numerous ships, owners are seeking to switch from fuel oil to methanol engines, necessitating a supply of green methanol to operate these vessels," he said at the Sibu SUPP Chinese New Year Open House last night.

Abang Johari emphasised Sarawak's commitment to transitioning towards a green economy, stressing the importance of adaptable policies that can evolve according to current needs and requirements.
