KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 (Bernama) -- The Philippines will be the host for the fifty-seventh session of the Typhoon Committee (TC57) meeting next year, while South Korea will take on the hosting duties in 2026.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Muhammad Helmi Abdullah, in a statement today, said the decision was made during the five-day TC56 meeting, which concluded today and was hosted by Malaysia.

“The hosting of the TC56 meeting demonstrates Malaysia’s commitment to play an active role on the international stage, supporting regional efforts to enhance typhoon monitoring and prediction capabilities in the Asia-Pacific region.

“The primary objective of convening this meeting is to coordinate essential planning and implementation measures aimed at preventing loss of life and minimising property damage caused by typhoons in TC member countries,” said the statement.

Muhammad Helmi said that the meeting also emphasised the importance of planning and implementing projects aimed at enhancing collaborative efforts to mitigate the impact of typhoons in each TC member country.

During the meeting, METMalaysia was honoured with the Dr. Roman L. Kintanar Award for 2023.

The TC56 meeting was attended by 96 participants from member countries in the Asia Pacific region, including Malaysia, as well as representatives from international organisations such as the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).

TC56 was the first face-to-face meeting held since the global COVID-19 pandemic began in mid-2019, with TC annual meetings conducted virtually during the pandemic.
